The system proposed in Matt GrimleyâÄôs Friday column sounds like a wonderful solution to a problem that certainly needs to be fixed. However, this concept of âÄúessentially replacing the military with our teachersâÄù is predicated on the false notion that our occupation defines our persona. To an extent, our careers do manipulate our personalities, but it is unreasonable to expect that the entire teaching force of the next generation of Americans can adopt the military-esque lifestyle which he proposes. Not just anyone can succeed in the military, and not just anyone can succeed as a teacher; this truth is due to their respective goals, previous life experiences, training and personality traits. Frankly, it is demeaning both to teachers and to members of the military to suggest that either lifestyle is so easily interchangeable with the other. Jake Knighton University Student
