35W bridge memorial vandalized

Two days after being dedicated, the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse has been vandalized, according to the Star Tribune.

It appears that someone ripped a few letters off the stone wall of the memorial, which is supposed to read:  “Our lives are not only defined by what happens, but by how we act in the face of it, not only by what life brings us, but by what we bring to life. Selfless actions and compassion create enduring community out of tragic events.”

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak called on the vandals to return the letters when he visited the memorial Wednesday afternoon.

“When the bridge collapsed and people were suffering, hundred of thousands of Minnesotans surrounded them with compassion,” Rybak told reporters. “Now one or more individuals, through a single act of remarkable ignorance, are prolonging that suffering.”

The remaining letters will be removed until new ones can be made, according to the Strib.
