Minnesota Royal Week nears an end

The agriculture-based event series winds down as Spring Jam approaches.

This week marked the 93rd annual Minnesota Royal Week. Minnesota Royal is conducted by the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences , specifically for the St. Paul campus community. The week includes such events as a milk maid, lip-sync contest and a quiz bowl. Animal science sophomore Kevin Borst sat outside of the St. Paul Student Center early Thursday morning as he accepted donations for one of the weekâÄôs marquee events, Stack the Trailer, where students collected non-perishable food items to donate to hunger relief organization Second Harvest Heartland . ItâÄôs primarily a student, faculty and alumni celebration of livestock on the St. Paul campus. There are very similar elements between Minnesota Royal Week, Spring Jam and Homecoming, such as the competition between students to vie for the crown. But Royal Week stands out because the majority of the activities focus on agriculture and livestock. Current Director of Alumni Relations in CFANS Mary Buschette can recall being involved in Royal Week during her undergraduate years in the 1980s. âÄúItâÄôs an opportunity to support agriculture,âÄù she said. âÄúAs a person who did not grow up with livestock, it was an opportunity to learn more about it.âÄù Those involved with Minnesota Royal Week say the events provide them with the opportunity to enjoy doing the things they love in a style similar to bigger University of Minnesota initiatives. Although it occurs directly before the UniversityâÄôs Spring Jam, there is no relationship between the two. âÄúWe still go out and support the Spring Jam events.âÄù Borst said. âÄúItâÄôs just like we have our own little version on the St. Paul campus.âÄù Jason Ertl , also a sophomore animal science major, said the Minnesota Royal Week is a cross between homecoming and general barnyard activities. The week is sponsored by organizations such as Land OâÄô Lakes and Cargill , as well as several individual donations and school grants. Royal week comes to an official close on Saturday with awards for livestock.
