Freshman goaltender Amanda Leveille earned the WCHA conference's Rookie of the Week award Wednesday.
Leveille has played backup this season to senior goaltender Noora Räty. But the freshman saw some rare playing time Friday on the road against St. Cloud State when head coach Brad Frost decided to rest Räty.
The Gophers beat the Huskies 2-0 to garner Leveille her third career win and shutout. She tallied 24 saves in her first start since Nov. 25, 2012. Leveille has played 780 minutes this year without letting a goal through. This is her first WCHA honor.
Minnesota as a whole has 23 WCHA awards this season with 11 in the Rookie of the Week category.
The Gophers begin the WCHA playoffs this weekend against Bemidji State in a best-of-three series at Ridder Arena.
