Several fire trucks and ambulances responded to an alarm that went off at Smith Hall on Friday evening. All four stories of Smith Hall were evacuated and a large surrounding area, extending from Northrop Mall to Pleasant Street, was closed off. Minneapolis Deputy Fire Chief Dave DeWall said there weren’t signs of a chemical leak or spill. But officials waited for the University’s environmental services to inspect the building. No chemicals were found, and the alarm appears to have malfunctioned. The University’s chemistry department is housed in Smith Hall.
