Mayor Rybak signs community gardening amendments

Minneapolis Mayor R. T. Rybak approved amendments to the City's zoning code earlier today expanding options for local gardeners.

The amendments passed by City Council Friday will make it easier for urban gardeners to grow and sell their own produce according to a press release from the mayor's office.

The new zoning codes will allow small market gardens up to 10,000 square feet to apply for a temporary use permit in which they can sell their produce up to 15 days per year.

Large market gardens over 10,000 square feet can apply for that same permit as long as they are compatible with surrounding properties.

Urban farms will be allowed in industrial districts allowing the produce to be grown, processed and distributed on the same lot.
