Woman raped at gunpoint on campus

A 42-year-old woman was raped at gunpoint Oct. 3 near the East River Flats Park, according to a University Police report.
The assault occurred between 8:15 and 8:50 p.m.
The rape suspect is described as a white male who is 5 feet 7 inches tall and 150 pounds. He is estimated to be between the ages of 37 and 43 with a thin mustache, light blond hair and thick eyebrows, according to police reports.
According to a University crime alert, the suspect was wearing a maroon nylon jacket and black jeans during the incident.
A further description and composite sketch of the suspect can be found on the University Police Web site at www.umn.edu/umpolice/crimealerts.htm.
University Police Detective Marianne Scheel declined to comment on the investigation Thursday.
Rapes committed by strangers are uncommon, according to statistics compiled by University Police and the Program Against Sexual Violence. Records maintained by PASV since 1993 indicate that 64 stranger sexual assaults were reported to the campus victim advocacy center — about 13 percent of the total number of reported assaults.
