Flasher suspect appears in court

A man who was arrested for allegedly exposing his genitals to a 14-year-old girl at Wilson Library appeared in court yesterday.

Richard Lee Sanders was charged with two felonies: fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct and indecent exposure. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison and $10,000.

According to a Hennepin County court complaint, the victim was studying in Wilson Library when she heard a noise, as if someone were trying to get her attention.

When the victim looked up, Sanders was allegedly standing several feet away from her, had his genitals exposed and was masturbating, according to the complaint.

The victim looked away and Sanders allegedly made another noise. When she looked up the second time, the victim said, Sanders again stood with his penis exposed, according to the complaint.

Police sent out a University-wide e-mail Aug. 30 asking for the community’s help in locating Sanders.

“Obviously, we took this extremely seriously and that’s why we put out the University alert,” Deputy Police Chief for the University Police Department Steve Johnson said.

“This is the type of person we don’t want to feel welcome on campus,” he said. “I’d like to thank the community for coming forward to help us with information in locating this guy so we could pick him up.”

When police showed the victim two photographic line-ups, she immediately identified Sanders, according to the complaint.

Sanders has been sentenced for indecent exposure six times in the last 10 years.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 29. His bail is set at $20,000.
