The Gophers men’s tennis team will host the 17th annual Ice Volleys Showcase this Friday and Saturday at the Burnsville Racquet Club in Burnsville, Minn.
Competition begins Friday at 3 p.m. between No. 40 Kansas and Western Michigan. The No. 23 Gophers will take on No. 38 South Alabama at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Consolation and championship matches will be played on Saturday at 3 and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
Minnesota features 14th-ranked Tom Chicoine, who has compiled a 23-3 overall record this season. Chicoine won the ITA Region IV championships in East Lansing, Mich., and the Penn Fall Classic. Most recently, he competed in the title match of the Big Ten singles indoor championships in Madison, Wis., but came up short and took runner-up honors.
The Gophers finished the 1997-98 season on a high note, defeating highly-ranked teams like Notre Dame and Northwestern to win the Region IV championships and qualify for a trip to the NCAA tournament. Minnesota returns all eight letterwinners from last season.
Admission to the Ice Volleys Showcase is free.
