The Gophers women’s hockey team and the Minnesota Whitecaps are tied 0-0 after one period of play.
The Gophers are also without senior Emily West, junior Anne Schleper and freshman Amanda Kessel tonight. West is in crutches after sustaining an injury in the opening series against Clarkson. There is no timetable for her return.
Kessel and Schleper are resting in preparation for tomorrow’s regular-season home opener against Wayne State. Junior Alyssa Grogan started in goal for the Gophers and stopped nine shots in the first period.
Equipped with a Gophers helmet and leg pads, Whitecaps goalie Kim Hanlon stopped 15 shots in the first period. Hanlon, a former Gopher, twice robbed forward Laura May of a goal with two diving stops late in the period.
