Rivalry basketball game set to tip off Friday

Wish you had a basketball game to watch in between tonight's NIT final and Saturday's Final Four national semifinals?

Now you do.

Alpha Gamma Rho and Farmhouse will face off Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Concordia's gym.  The event is part of a rivalry that goes back to 1947, Alpha Gamma Rho President Royce Durham said.

Each year since then, Alpha Gamma Rho and Farmhouse have competed in football, basketball and softball.

"We like to call it the biggest rivalry in college sports," Durham said.

The traveling trophy they play for is an actual brass spittoon that was "borrowed" from a railroad station, Durham said.

"Alpha Gamma Rho's athletic director at the time, Jim Wempner, decided that we should have a traveling trophy between Alpha Gamma Rho and Farmhouse," he said.

Farmhouse currently has the Spittoon after winning the fall football game.  The game features the same referees that do the Universit's inramurals, Durham said.

The event draws all of the fraternity and sorority houses from the St. Paul campus and a good chunk of Bailey hall.

"The rivalry between the two chapters is heated because both recruit men of the same agricultural backgrounds," Durham said.  "Sororities on campus also tend to have an opinion on which fraternity is better, so it is fun to watch the fans get into the game too."

The winning team gets to paint the spittoon in their Greek letters.
