Bachmann wins Minnesota State Fair straw poll

MN State Fair Straw Poll results

Straw polls appear to be presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann’s thing – she pulled in another victory at the Minnesota State Fair, the Republican Party of Minnesota announced Tuesday.

Bachmann won the straw poll in her homestate, held over the course of Aug. 25 to Sept. 5. But perhaps most surprising is Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s strong showing – 25 percent of the vote, compared to Bachmann’s 30 percent – and Mitt Romney’s dismal numbers.

The Minnesota victory comes on the heels of a less-than-stellar month for Bachmann’s campaign. Her nationwide poll numbers have been sagging, and two of her top campaign managers left their positions Monday.

Bachmann also won the Iowa Straw Poll on Aug. 13 in Ames – a far larger and more important poll for presidential candidates. Almost 17,000 votes were cast in Ames, as compared to the 7,731 tallied in St. Paul.

Many Republicans angling for their party’s nomination, including Bachmann and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, poured much of their money and time into Iowa, which hosts one of the first primaries in the nation, in hopes of giving their campaigns a boost. The day after his disappointing third-place finish in Ames, Pawlenty dropped out of the running.
