Whalen takes home honors

Sophomore guard Lindsay Whalen earned Big Ten women’s basketball player of the week honors after propelling Minnesota to season-opening victories over Butler and Santa Clara.
Whalen averaged 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals per game in the Minnesota Basketball Classic and shot a remarkable 83.3 percent from the floor.
Cross country
Minnesota’s men’s cross country team finished 25th at the NCAA championships on Monday, hosted by Furman University in Greenville, S.C. The Gophers were one of nine schools competing in its fifth-straight national meet.
Junior Will McComb placed 72nd to lead the way for Minnesota. Junior Toby Henkels finished 114th while Ryan Ford placed 151st.
Minnesota’s women’s cross country team, competing in its fifth consecutive national meet, placing 25th at the NCAA championships.
Sophomore and All-Region pick Darja Vasiljeva finished first for the Gophers and 86th overall.
Second team All-Big Ten freshman Lisa Dyer placed 111th and All-Region selection Laura Bjork came in 133rd.
