Regents vote to nominate Northrop Mall as Historical Place

The University Of Minnesota Board Of Regents voted Wednesday to nominate the Northrop Mall district to the National Register of Historical Places.

In 1997 the Mall was designated as a Regents Campus Historical District and was listed in 2009 as National Register of Historical Places eligible.

President Bob Bruininks is currently working on a renovation plan for Northrop Memorial Auditorium, to bring the building back up to code.

He told the Minnesota Daily that, “[Northrop is] one of the most iconic buildings in the state, and we’re perilously close to closing it because it cannot support the kind of work we do.”

The board’s agenda described the Northrop Mall District as, “one of the most intact examples of this type of campus planning remaining in the United States.”

Both preparing documentation and officially submitting an application to the register will reguire University resources.

The approved boarder of the Northrop Mall District will stretch south from the auditorium past Coffman Memorial Union, as far east as Akerman Hall and west as far as Fraser Hall.
