Playwright sues Guthrie

For one Guthrie Theater playwright, the saying “break a leg” didn’t bring good luck.

Marsha Norman, who was commissioned to write a play for the Guthrie in 2010, filed a lawsuit against the theater Monday seeking damages for an injury she sustained there.

When she toured the Guthrie that same year, she tore her meniscus and sustained “other trauma to the knee” when she fell from its Wurtele Thrust Stage.

Norman, who is seeking at least $50,000 in damages, was “unfamiliar” with the stage where she stepped off a  “poorly lit temporary ramp that lacked any step, or guardrail, or lighting, or marking to reveal its potential hazard,” according to the lawsuit.

A representative from the Guthrie said the company has been working to resolve the case since December of last year.
