If I didn’t know any better, I’d guess that James Blake’s now-leaked but soon-to-be-released self-titled was the musical creation of some sad robot living in a hopeless dystopian future.
The ought’s proved that electronica was hardly a fad. But while most digital maestro’s pushed you to put on your dancing shoes, Blake takes his electronic schtick a place far more intimate and unconventional. He croons like an R&B singer over plaintive piano and floods of white noise. Sometimes it’s beautiful and other times it can become redundant but Blake never comes off as unoriginal.
