Minnesota pitcher Mike Kobow was selected in the 27th round of the First Year Player draft last Wednesday by Detroit. Kobow joins Gophers teammate Jack Hannahan who was taken by the Tigers last Tuesday.

San Francisco and Los Angeles had contacted Kobow in the earlier rounds, but he declined both offers.

“They didn’t seem like they were the right situation for me,” Kobow said. “The amount they were offering wasn’t what I was looking for.”

Detroit has yet to make a Kobow a formal offer, but should do so soon. The junior is not sure whether or not he will accept the offer, saying that it must be the right situation.

“I’ve already turned down offers from earlier rounds,” Kobow said. “So we’ll have to see how it plays out.

Kobow is the 130th player to be drafted from Minnesota’s program.

Holman named finalist

Incoming freshman Jerry Holman was named a finalist for the 2001 Tournament of the Americans Team. Holman, a National Junior College All-American, is one of 19 finalists invited to training camp Aug. 8-13 at Vincennes University in Indiana. The squad will be pared down to 10 and will compete in the COPABA Tournament of the Americans being held Aug. 15-26 in Neuquen, Argentina.

Space remains at hoops camp
