LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — U.S. District Judge George Howard Jr. said Susan McDougal is to be released in 10 days. Howard said he decided to lean “to the side of compassion and mercy rather than strictness.”
Mrs. McDougal is to be released to the custody of her parents, who were in the courtroom for the hearing.
Howard said he hoped his decision would be an incentive for Mrs. McDougal to rehabilitate herself. She faces trial on embezzlement-related charges in California July 13 and is to be tried in Little Rock for criminal contempt on Sept. 28.
