Olympic trials update: No Olympics for Mead

The Minnesota men's track and field team officially ended its U.S. Olympic trials run Thursday in Eugene, Ore.

Senior Hassan Mead raced in the final of the 5,000-meter run but did not finish high enough to make the Olympics. Mead placed eighth out of 16 runners and crossed the line in 13:30.21. He needed a top-three finish and time of 13:20.00 or lower to travel to London.

Galen Rupp continued his distance dominance after winning the 10,000 meters by also capturing the 5,000 meters at 13:22.67.

Two former women's team runners were in action as well. Gabriele Anderson and Heather Kampf both competed in the preliminary of the 1,500-meter run. Anderson placed second overall and in her heat at 4:14.23. Kampf, after failing to make the Olympic team in the 800 final, placed sixth in her heat and 23rd overall at 4:17.29. Both were among the 24 of 30 athletes who advanced to Friday's semifinal.
