Minnesota Twins closer Glen Perkins has been selected to the American League All-Star team and will participate in the All-Star game on July 16 in New York.
Perkins, who pitched for the Gophers from 2003 to 2004, becomes the first former Gophers player to be selected to the game since 1996, when Seattle Mariners catcher Dan Wilson made the team.
Perkins has converted 20 of his 22 save opportunities this season and has a 1.93 earned run average while striking out 45 batters.
