Olympic swimming trials update: Spencer makes 200 breaststroke final

Minnesota senior Haley Spencer advanced to the 200-meter breaststroke final at U.S. Olympic trials Friday in Omaha, Neb.

Spencer placed fourth in her semifinal heat and claimed the last spot in Saturday's eight-swimmer final. She clocked in at 2:27.21. Former Gophers competitor Keri Hehn also swam in the semifinal. She placed 13th out of 16 swimmers at 2:30.07 and did not qualify for the final.

Several Minnesota women also competed in the 100 freestyle. Erin Caflisch had the highest finish in 78th place with a time of 57.24. Tess Behrens followed in 85th place at 57.32. Tori Simenec touched the wall in 57.65 and placed 103rd. Future freshman Lauren Votava rounded out the Gophers' results in 122nd with a time of 58.32.

On the men's side, two former Minnesota swimmers took part in the 200 individual medley. Alex Wold continued his series of almost-finishes when he placed 20th in preliminaries, just four places out of the semifinals. He clocked in at 2:03.28. Russell Payne's 2:04.98 earned 42nd place.
