Minneapolis’s North Loop neighborhood exudes upscale refinement. The swank yuppie utopia is home to some of the metropolis’s best restaurants and boutiques. The stylish masses congregate over coffee at Dogwood, drinks at Spoon and Stable and groceries at Whole Foods. In short, it’s the most stylish neighborhood in the city.
Roaming the North Loop’s warehouse-lined streets to find style gods and goddesses proved more daunting than it should’ve been since most of the neighborhood’s denizens were beating the heat in their air-conditioned lofts or enjoying a sweat-filled run.
These four folks, however, beat the heat to wander the avenues in their Saturday best.
Erick DeLeon
33, Store Manager of Martin Patrick 3
What he wore: Billy Reid shirt, Wings + Horns pants, Trask shoes, Rag & Bone shirt-jacket, Thom Browne tie, Raen glasses.
When I first spotted DeLeon, I thought his Rag & Bone shirt-jacket was a linen blazer. While I was wrong, the deep navy hue tied together the rest of his outfit’s neutral colors. DeLeon’s gray linen pants exemplify proper tailoring and fit. (Men take note: This is what you should aim for.) Both DeLeon’s shirt and tie were patterned, but instead of looking overdone and sloppy, they complemented each other due to their lack of bold, punchy colors, serving as a reminder that subtlety is the key to refinement.
Jen Kaplan
30, Marketing manager
What she wore: Target dress, Minnetonka Moccasin shoes, Ray-Ban sunglasses, Len Druskin purse, necklace.
Kaplan’s dress succeeds because of its simple silhouette and pattern, set against a navy backdrop. While she bought it at Target, the breezy, lightweight fabric and on-point fit make it look like it came from a local boutique instead — proving good style doesn’t have to cost a fortune. The black Minnetonka Moccasin shoes Kaplan sported were a modern take on a timeless staple (as well as being locally made). Along with her Ray-Ban Aviators, they anchored her outfit.
Thomas Moss
27, Consultant
What he wore: Ginger Snap T-shirt bought in Bali, J. Crew jeans, Red Wing boots, Warby Parker sunglasses, Elgin watch.
White on white is a stellar summer clothing combination, but white on wheat ups the ante just a little bit. Moss’ white T-shirt pops, thanks to its faded patina and loose yet form-fitting contour and scoop neck; it resembles the worn-in white T-shirt we all wish we had. The stark tee contrasts well with the wheat-colored jeans, which are a nice shade between Moss’ shirt and his brown, moccasin-toed Red Wing boots. Moss is unafraid to accessorize, and his get-up is proof that the right pair of sunglasses can pull an outfit together.
Kathryn Korb
37, Creative Director
What she wore: Topshop shirt, Zara skirt, sandals, Parc Boutique necklace, vintage sunglasses, belt and purse.
Vintage finds add panache to trendy ensembles. Case in point: Hughes’s sunglasses feature au courant mirrored lenses that don’t end up looking plasticky due to the solid tortoiseshell frame. Korb’s long Zara skirt made her playful Topshop crop-top T-shirt look refined, creating a look befit any birthday girl headed out for a night on the town
(Korb’s birthday was Sunday, and she was on a celebration outing with her friends).
