Drink this:
Old Fashioned at Spoon and Stable
I’m old fashioned, not just in the sense that I like a classic way of doing things, but that the Old Fashioned is my drink of choice. No one in town is doing it better than Spoon and Stable, Chef Gavin Kaysen’s buzzed-about North Loop hotspot. The Old Fashioned ($13) departs from its rye roots by using Plantation Grande Reserve Rum, which lends the drink a refined, luxurious and sweet kick.
Eat this:
The Sandor at GYST Fermentation Bar
Situated in a slip of a storefront just off eat street, GYST Fermentation Bar is a shrine to all things, well, fermented. The Sandor ($9) is a gussied-up peanut butter sandwich, topped with local Kiss My Cabbage kimchee. While the combo raises eyebrows at first, the flavor combination is outrageous, making such strange bedfellows a match made in heaven.
Warm up with this:
“Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite”
Take one listen to Maxwell’s 1996 classic “Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite,” and it sounds much fresher than its 19-year-old age belies. Sensuous, provocative jams like “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)” and “Welcome” feature cool sounds tailored for fall weather and are perfect for anytime of the day, whether over the morning’s first cup of coffee, an afternoon study session or during a little late night “Sumthin’ Sumthin’.”
Thursday
Madonna
Want to know where Miley Cyrus got her moves? Look no further than Madonna, whom the former Hannah Montana superstar ripped off — more or less — detail for detail. Madonna did what Miley’s doing now 30 years earlier and a whole lot more. The Queen of Pop is still going strong, as evidenced by her ability to still draw a crowd after an illustrious career.

Saint Paul Art Crawl
While there seems like an infinite number of local art crawls throughout the summer and early fall months, the Saint Paul Art Crawl is worth a look, at the very least for the chance to cross the Mississippi. Hundreds of artists will display their work starting Friday, and many of the studios are concentrated in the booming Lowertown neighborhood. Hit one of the area restaurants for a bite to eat, and spend your evening meandering in and out of galleries and studios on the quiet St. Paul streets.
