City officials from the Falcon Heights City Council held an emergency meeting Friday afternoon, following the fatal police shooting of St. Paul man, Philando Castile.
On Wednesday night, Castile was shot by St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed in a press release on Thursday. Castile was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis on Wednesday night.
At the meeting, council members voted to hire a public relations consultant for the city, and allocated funds up to $50,000 for the city administrator to use in the case of emergency situations and protests, Paul Moretto, Falcon Heights’ community development coordinator confirmed.
The council meeting was not open for public comment, said University history professor and Falcon Heights resident Sarah Chambers, who attended the meeting on Friday.
Chambers said some local churches and neighborhood organizations in the city are trying to organize meetings to talk about the aftermath of the shooting.
“I never expected to see Falcon Heights in the national, much less the international news,” she said. “It is terrible to see it getting notoriety for this event and I … want people in the larger Twin Cities community to know that residents in Falcon Heights want people to be safe.”
