Kaler names child safety committee

University President Eric Kaler has named the members of a committee that will create a new policy on child safety.

According to a letter sent to the six members of the committee last week, Kaler is asking the group to develop a new system-wide policy on the safety and protection of children on the University of Minnesota-system campuses. He also is asking for the group to review operational practices associated with children on campuses and propose necessary changes.

The University does not currently have a child safety policy. Kaler first addressed this issue during a Board of Regents meeting in October when he presented his findings from the Freeh Report, the FBI investigation about the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal that rocked Penn State University last year.

Deputy General Counsel Bill Donohue will chair the committee. Other members include: Dean Jean Quam from the College of Education and Human Development; Pam Wheelock, vice president for University services; Lynn Zentner, director of the Office of Institutional Compliance; Liz Eull, Kaler’s deputy chief of staff, and Carole McNaughton-Commers, youth and community director for UMTC Recreational Sports.

The group will have until March 15, 2013, to prepare its recommendations.
