A new school year and a new student victim due to the dangerous streets surrounding campus. This time the victim was a female cyclist, who was heading west down the bike lane on Fourth Street Southeast, when she was run over by a bus at the intersection of 10th Avenue Southeast. The incident is eerily similar to the 2008 incident in which Caitlin Arnett, also a University of Minnesota student, had her legs crushed by a bus at the same intersection. Both of these incidences occurred just blocks from where Kimberly Hull was killed last year.
These are not accidents. The University should immediately prioritize a new design for this intersection. Commuting to class should be safe for all students. The sooner the University and the city team up to accomplish this, the better. Until then, it is only a matter of time before another student is seriously injured on their way to class.
