Dayton may veto performance-based teacher layoff bill

Gov. Mark Dayton may veto a bill that would allow schools to change the basis of teacher layoffs from seniority to of performance, the Pioneer Press reports.

Two different versions of the bill were passed in the Republican-controlled Minnesota Senate and House of Representatives. A compromised bill that incorporates the two is expected to be sent to Dayton.

“Right now it looks to me, frankly, more like an election ploy than serious legislation,” Dayton said Wednesday on Minnesota Public Radio.

Dayton questioned the wisdom of the switch before the state is finished with its new teacher evaluation system.
