A University student was forced to defend herself after she refused to give beer to two men walking by her house April 13.

Kirsten Collins, a women’s studies senior, and three friends were at her apartment on the 500 block of 15th Avenue Southeast when two men approached them and asked for beer.

After Collins said no, the men left but returned with approximately 20 of their friends. The men threw Collins’ trash cans and chairs around on her porch, she said.

“This was just about 20 drunk white guys who wanted to fight,” Collins said. “Only in Dinkytown would someone fight you for a beer.”

Collins said she called Minneapolis police when the men returned, and then went outside with a baseball bat. Officers arrived 15 minutes later, but the fight had already ensued, she said.

Men passing in the street stopped to help Collins and her three friends defend themselves, she said.

The men fled to a nearby apartment before the police arrived. Later, the men began loudly bragging about the incident, Collins said. She said police overheard the men and brought one back to Collins’ apartment for her to identify.

Her friend, a 21-year-old University student, made a citizen’s arrest of the 24-year-old man, according to the police report.

Before he fled, the man arrested had pulled out a knife and said he would cut Collins later, she said.

“I still have the bat, so I’m not that worried,” Collins said. “It just seemed like there wasn’t any reason for it.”

An 18-year-old University student was cited for a narcotics violation April 9 in Frontier Hall according to the police report.

University police officers were called to the scene after a resident smelled marijuana smoke coming from the suspect’s room, according to the police report.

The police confiscated three bags of marijuana, a bottle of prescription pills, glass marijuana pipes and a wooden dugout, according to the report.

Residence hall staff don’t find marijuana that often, said Kim Araya, University Student Behavior and Student Staffing coordinator.

Araya said staff always call police when they suspect a student has drugs. Students can be brought before Student Judicial Affairs for severe cases. The University can also transfer students to a different residence hall or terminate their hall contract, she said.

ï A 26-year-old Little Canada woman was arrested for prostitution and a 24-year-old St. Paul man was arrested for promoting prostitution April 9 in an apartment on the 2400 block of University Avenue Southeast, according to the police report.

The woman offered an undercover police officer sex for money before she was arrested. The man was arrested because he drove the woman to the apartment. He also had business cards in his possession for the escort service, according to the report.

The man was booked in Hennepin County Jail. He is no longer in custody.

ï A 20-year-old man’s wallet was stolen between 11 p.m. April 6 and 9 a.m. April 7 at The Library Bar and Grill at 1301 Fourth St. S.E. according to the police report.

The man reported the incident to police April 8 and said his credit card had been used that evening at a restaurant, according to the report.
