The Ohio State Buckeyes and Penn State Nittany Lions won't play in a postseason game this year, but the two football squads can still earn some hardware for their regular season efforts.
The Big Ten conference confirmed Tuesday both Ohio State and Penn State can still be named Leaders division champions if they finish the season with the best record, ESPN.com reported.
The two programs can't represent the Leaders division in the Big Ten championship game — or take part in any bowl game — but they can compete with Indiana, Illinois, Purdue and Wisconsin for the regular-season division championship trophy.
The team that ranks the highest outside of OSU and PSU will represent the division in the Big Ten title game.
Ohio State can compete in postseason play after this season, but Penn State has an additional three years until the program is bowl or playoff eligible. The current Bowl Championship System will dissolve after the 2013-14 season to form the first-ever four-team college football playoff.
