The U.S. women’s volleyball team kicked off its Olympics by defeating South Korea three sets to one Saturday.
Former Gophers setter Lindsey Berg started, and Gophers head coach Hugh McCutcheon coached the top-ranked team in the world.
The U.S. won the first two sets handily, 25-19 and 25-17. But it struggled in the third set, falling 20-25. The Americans managed to finish the match in the fourth set 25-21.
Berg led the team in sets, setting up 95 spikes throughout the game. She also contributed 15 serves, four spikes, seven blocks and 10 digs.
Minnesota named McCutcheon head coach of the women’s volleyball program in February 2011. He will officially join to Gophers once his national team duties are complete.
