Despite accumulating more shots, corner kicks and scoring opportunities, the Gophers soccer team fell 1-0 to 20th-ranked San Diego State on Friday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
SDSU’s Megan Jurado tapped in an easy rebound goal past Gophers goalkeeper Cat Parkhill 58 seconds into overtime after Parkhill muffed a shot.
“We’re pretty disappointed, because we felt like we played well enough to win,” head coach Stefanie Golan said. “We put a lot of pressure on their goal and we just didn’t finish our opportunities.”
The two teams played fairly even in the second half of the very physical game. Minnesota had 18 shots in the game, six on frame, and looked like the better team throughout.
“Overall I thought we had the better of the play in the game,” Golan said. “In the first half [SDSU] made nine subs — we really put them under a lot of pressure, [which] they weren’t used to.”
Golan said the team needs to work on closing games.
“We just have to continue to get reps,” Golan said. “It’s got to be where our girls can do it with their eyes closed. We’re hitting the frame OK for the most part, but we’ve got to find a way to not hit it to the goalkeeper.”
The two teams battled to a scoreless stalemate in a first half that featured very few chances for either squad.
SDSU’s best chance came in the 17th minute when Tiffany Hurst slipped past Minnesota’s defense and fired a shot nearside that was saved by a diving Parkhill.
The next two legitimate chances belonged to the Gophers.
In the 29th minute, Brianne Price provided a spark seconds after being substituted into the match. She launched a shot from outside the penalty area toward the upper-left corner of the net, but SDSU goalkeeper Rachel Boaz stretched to save the shot.
Taylor Uhl put the ball in the back of the net in the 40th minute, but the goal was called off because of offsides.
Minnesota will play on Sunday at home against DePaul.
