Gophers quarterback Demry Croft, who started the last six games of the 2017 season, will leave the team, a University spokesperson confirmed Monday morning.

Croft made the request to leave the team following the 31-0 loss to No. 5 Wisconsin on Saturday, according to University spokesperson Paul Rovnak. He ended the season as the Gophers starting quarterback, beating out redshirt senior Conor Rhoda for the starting spot. Croft had two more years of eligibility with the Gophers.

Croft was suspended from the team after the second game against Oregon State. He didn’t come back until four weeks later in the Michigan State game on Oct. 14, before starting the final six games of the season. Fleck said he was suspended because of “personal issues.”

With Croft gone and Rhoda graduating, the Gophers have two scholarship quarterbacks, redshirt freshman Seth Green and freshman Tanner Morgan, on the roster for next year, with almost zero experience between the two. Green saw time this season at the end of the Middle Tennessee game.

Croft finished his Gophers career with 708 passing yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions across 12 games with a 41.4 completion percentage. He had four rushing touchdowns on 88 attempts and averaged four yards a carry.

Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press was first with the report.
