Gophers football head coach Tracy Claeys is likely to receive an extension in the offseason, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Claeys just finished his first full season as the head coach of the Gophers football team and has two seasons left on his current contract.

University Athletics Director Mark Coyle said that Claeys, “is our head football coach” in a statement released Monday afternoon on the job status of Claeys.

“Tracy and I have begun to discuss this past season and the plan for our program moving forward,” Coyle said in the statement. “As is the case with every one of our head coaches, he has my full support. I will do whatever I can to help him and our students achieve at the highest levels.”

The Gophers football team finished with an 8-4 record in the regular season, after winning five regular season games last year. It was the third time in four seasons the Gophers won eight games, the first time the program had accomplished that since 1905.

Claeys took over as head coach after Jerry Kill resigned on Oct. 28, 2015. The former defensive coordinator for the Gophers was named the interim head coach the same day, then was elevated to the permanent position on Nov. 11, 2015.

Kyle Goblirsch of 247Sports was the first to report the news of a possible extension for Claeys.
