A woman died from her injuries after she fell from the 10th floor of The Bridges apartments in Dinkytown early this morning, officials say.

The Minneapolis Fire Department responded to a report at The Bridges apartments, located at 930 University Ave. SE., early this morning, according to an MFD news release. The woman was found outside of the building after the call was made around 1:00 a.m.

A notice sent by the University of St. Thomas on Thursday afternoon identified the woman as 19-year-old Joia Simpson, a first-year student from Bayside, California.

“It’s a great loss for us here at St. Thomas and the loss of a young person is always a difficult thing. And so we’re gathered together to support one another during this time of grieving and offer support for her family as well,” said Larry Blake, director of campus ministry at St. Thomas.

In an email sent to residents on Thursday morning, The Bridges management wrote that the incident happened in its Sky Lounge, a room that residents can reserve for gatherings.

“We share in the sorrow and our thoughts are with the family and friends.  We are working with all parties involved to help provide any assistance we can while also trying to respect the privacy of all involved,” the email stated.
