In Luis Ruuska’s Nov. 12 column, “Find safety in self-defense,” Ruuska suggests that students should consider some self-defense options to keep themselves safe — including carrying weapons.
I agree with some commenters that students shouldn’t take any weapon to campus. It’s helpful to build a harmonious atmosphere.
However, I think that students should also learn how to protect themselves. I strongly suggest that the University of Minnesota have classes regarding self-defense and negotiation skills to face campus crime.
I have read stories about survivors talking with criminals and negotiating their safety. That’s a skill students should develop.
