“I’ll be honest I kind of thought I was walking into a private radio station studio today,” Samia said to the crowd. “This is way better.” A performance by singer Samia during a Current-hosted happy hour on June 8, 2023.

The Current, a radio station part of Minnesota Public Radio, is hosting happy hour music sessions at local breweries this summer, most recently featuring Samia.

Taking place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Sociable Cider Werks on June 8, the event featured outdoor games, food from Unidos Food Co. and more.

Grace Tobin, a member of the audience, heard about the performance on social media.

“I saw it on Instagram and I was like, ‘What the hell?’” Tobin said. “Samia’s playing at Sociable?”

Tobin and her friends said they come to Sociable Cider Werks almost every Monday for their open mic nights.

“We love Samia,” said Lydia Kalenze, a current master’s student at the University of Minnesota. “I was so excited to hear she was doing a little free show.”

Sociable Cider Werks is located in the residential neighborhood of Northeast Minneapolis, with plenty of space and parking for visitors on an average day. However, the parking lot was packed for the happy hour, with the host, Mac Wilson, letting radio listeners know they might be better off coming on foot.

Wilson, a former University of Minnesota – Morris student “is known for his addiction to music,” according to The Current

“I’m still kind of processing that we are gonna get a Samia concert in 45 minutes, so that’s really exciting,” Wilson announced to the crowd.

The event, which began at 4 p.m., did not have live music until 6 p.m.

“I definitely thought that Samia was playing four to seven,” said Megan Setterlund, a member of the audience.

During the event, The Current highlighted their membership table, encouraging new and old members to sign up and get a free drink.

“Enjoy the ciders, enjoy the beers, enjoy the membership tent, enjoy the music,” Wilson said.

For her 30-minute set, Samia played songs including “Big Wheel” and the title track to her most recent album, “Honey.”

“I’ll be honest, I kind of thought I was walking into a private radio station studio today,” Samia said to the crowd. “This is way better.”

Although Samia is not from Minnesota, she spent time here when writing her albums.

“This is the best city,” she said. “You guys are lucky to live here.”

She has several songs with lyrics about the Twin Cities including “Minnesota” and “Kill Her Freak Out.” Her song “Elephant” opens with the lyrics, “Last time I was drunk in Minneapolis / I swore I’d never end up here again / Essentially the drunkenness just happens / In minutes from the moment that you land.”

The Current’s Happy Hours are free and open to all. Five more happy hours are planned for the summer and early fall, which you can RSVP for on their website.

The next event will be held at Utepils Brewing on June 22 with a performance by Annie DiRusso, a Nashville-based alternative-rock artist.
