Three Gophers swimmers won Big Ten weekly awards Tuesday.
Junior Kyler Van Swol won Swimmer of the Week after his performance in Minnesota's 165.5-132.5 win over Iowa on Friday. Van Swol placed first in the 100-yard butterfly in 47.82 seconds, first in the 200 butterfly in 1:47.47 and first in the 200 medley relay in 1:29.06. He also finished third in the 200 individual medley.
Van Swol's 100 butterfly time is the fastest in the nation so far this season. It was also an NCAA provisional qualifying time, along with his 200 butterfly time.
This is Van Swol's third weekly award of his career and first of the season. He last won in January.
On the women's side, Tori Simenec won Swimmer of the Week after the Gophers trounced the Hawkeyes 192-103. The sophomore touched the wall first in all of her events — the 200 freestyle in 1:48.25, the 200 individual medley in 2:03.13 and the 400 freestyle relay in 3:22.40. This is Simenec's first Swimmer of the Week award and third overall weekly award.
Kierra Smith again won Freshman of the Week. She placed first in her only event, the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:02.42. Her time was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. This is Smith's third Freshman of the Week award and fourth weekly award overall.
The Gophers will compete at USA Swimming's Minneapolis Grand Prix this weekend at the University Aquatic Center.
