The University of Minnesota hosted the Gary Wilson track invitational this past Thursday, an all-day event featuring various track and field events.

The annual event serves as a reunion for Minnesota track and field fans, who get to see friends and family who attend colleges close and far from home, such as North Dakota State University and Minnesota State University.

Notable races throughout the day featured University of Minnesota athletes Jace Haerter and Avery Marasco-Johnson, who ran unattached and won the first two events. A handful of Gopher student-athletes had a series of wins scattered across other events.

Wanyae Belle, Zion Campbell, Jayden Green, Joseph Manser, and Trei Thorogood took the top six spots in the men’s 100-meter race. Four out of the five male athletes, all except for Belle, took four out of the top seven spots in the 200-meter run.

Victory Godah placed fourth in the 100 meters, and Kyaliah Davis placed fifth in the 200-meter women’s races.

The 400-meter hurdles featured a standout performance, with four female athletes surpassing the meet record of 1:00.12. Ellie Kuechle, Kitania Headley, and Kennedy Martinson, all representing Minnesota, joined Olivia Keller of the University of St. Thomas in breaking the record.

Martinson ultimately secured the win with an impressive time of 57.97 seconds.

The meet was marked by hot weather and high winds, which impacted performances across the board. But despite the meet schedule being rearranged, the event was a meaningful community builder, with families and old friends reuniting.
