In any sport, the postseason is about trying to make it to the end. For some athletes, how you get there and who is beside you is just as important as how far you go.
For senior Isabella McCauley and junior Mariana Mesones, the upcoming Regional Tournament carries both stakes. There is the chance to extend their season, but the opportunity to spend one more tournament together is just as meaningful.
On Wednesday afternoon, it was announced that McCauley and Mesones will represent the Gophers at the Ann Arbor Regional. Minnesota will not compete in the team portion of the tournament, but the program will still have a presence with McCauley and Mesones.
Both earned strong positioning, teeing off as the No. 2 and No. 3 individual seeds. It speaks to their consistency and sets the stage for one final chance for them to compete together.
“I’m very excited to play the Michigan regional, super excited to play with Bella,” Mesones said. “I played with her my freshman year, and it’s super nice to spend our last regional together. I’m super excited to represent the Maroon and Gold.”
There is comfort in that familiarity for Mesones. She is returning to a level she has played at before and doing so alongside a teammate who has made an impact on her collegiate career.
For McCauley, being a senior means this tournament has extra meaning.
“I’m so excited to qualify for the Ann Arbor Regional,” McCauley said. “I’m really excited that I get to do it with Mariana. This is my last year, senior year, so I’m just excited to spend time with her and make the most of it.”
McCauley has been a consistent factor at regionals, qualifying in each year of her college career.
Her Gophers career will go down as one full of talent and steadiness. As a freshman, she earned a sixth-place finish, followed up by a tie for second in her sophomore year that sent her to nationals. Last year, she finished 18th at regionals.
In her final postseason run, she will have experience on her side. At the recent Big Ten Championships, McCauley showed that she is a contender with her fifth-place finish. She also knows how to navigate the pressure that comes with the postseason.
Meanwhile, Mesones’ season has been full of growth as well. She has earned her second regional tournament appearance and now arrives with more experience than she did when she placed 37th at regionals as a freshman.
Her scoring average has been in the low 70s this season, but her season low round of 69 shows that she has a high ceiling. If she can find her rhythm, she could find herself climbing the regional leaderboard.
Both players were also named to the Big Ten Second team this week, reinforcing why they earned their bids. They have maintained consistency within the conference and are now ready to make an impact nationally.
The path to nationals will not be easy, though.
Only the top five teams from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships. The margin for error is even slimmer for individuals. Only one golfer from each regional who is not on an advancing team will earn an individual spot.
This means there is no room to ease into this tournament, and every shot matters from the start. McCauley and Mesones will not have to face this isolating pressure alone. They will have a familiar presence to lean on as they try to extend their seasons.
Sometimes, in the postseason, it is not just about reaching the end. It is about making the journey last as long as possible and sharing the process with a friend.
