Some fire departments are now testing glow-in-the-dark coats, hats and other gear in order to better battle flames at night or locate their downed comrades, The Orange County Register reports.
California company Glowzone Inc. has been hosting training sessions with fire departments. These tests have shown a 30 percent reduction in the time it takes to rescue a firefighter in a crisis situation.

Fire chiefs have voiced their approval of the technology, which could also be applied for use by other emergency services.
