Lindsay Whalen, a former Minnesota All-American guard and current member of the Minnesota Lynx, was named to the 2010 USA Basketball Women’s World Championship Team for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
In four exhibition contests during during USA Basketball’s two-week training camp, Whalen averaged nine points, three rebounds and just over two assists per game.
Whalen was a key member of the Gophers women’s basketball squad that made it all the way to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament as a No. 7 seed in 2004. She returned to Minnesota as a member of the Lynx in January as part of a blockbuster trade that sent Renee Montgomery and the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft for Whalen and the No. 2 overall pick from the Connecticut Sun, where Whalen spent her first six years in the league.
The FIBA World Championship begins Thursday, with the USA National Team taking on Greece at 11:00 a.m. in a Pool B preliminary round game televised on NBA TV.
The FIBA World Championship will continue through Oct. 3 in the Czech Republic, and the gold medal-winning country receives a berth to the 2012 Olympic Games.
