Recent sports stories from MN Daily found to be fabricated

Three stories that appeared in the Minnesota Daily sports section in the past two weeks contained fabricated interviews, the newspaperâÄôs staff learned Sunday. A page 10 story, âÄúGerst returns to the Aquatic Center deck,âÄù in last weekâÄôs Daily contained sources who werenâÄôt interviewed, including Minnesota assistant swimming and diving coach Tyler Gerst, head swimming and diving coach Kelly Kremer and swimmer Kierra Smith. Another story published in last weekâÄôs Daily, âÄúMbakwe continues career abroad,âÄù from page 9, contained a fabricated interview with Chris Fleming, coach of the German basketball team Brose Baskets Bamberg. And a July 1 story on page 10, âÄúDeng fails to advance at U.S. Track Championships,âÄù mentioned two interviews âÄî with Minnesota athlete Goaner Deng and former Minnesota athlete Hassan Mead âÄî that didnâÄôt occur. Minnesota Daily sports reporter Grant Donald wrote these stories, and he has since been terminated. The Minnesota Daily strives for accuracy and accountability in its reporting, said Co-Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Tyler Gieseke, adding that falsification is not tolerated. Daily staff members will continue looking into DonaldâÄôs other stories to determine whether more fabrications were published.
