DFL bus tour visits U

Klobuchar, Ellison and others spoke to a cheering crowd behind Coffman on Monday.

A group of mostly University of Minnesota students cheered loudly next to a bus bearing the faces of Democratic leaders Monday night behind Coffman Memorial Union.

The bus traveled to various Minnesota cities during the past week, carrying Democrats like U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison and U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar on a final campaign tour before the election Tuesday.

U.S. Sen. Al Franken, state Rep. Paul Thissen and Democratic nominee for Congressional District 3 Brian Barnes joined Klobuchar and Ellison on the podium. They took turns speaking to the students, urging them to vote for Democrats and in opposition to the two constitutional amendments on Tuesday.

Students responded with cheers and applause.

“The energy there was amazing,” said Daveen Trentman, vice president of the College Democrats and a DFL staff member.

Although about 55 people were in the crowd, Trentman said she thought the turnout would have been twice as large if the event had been held a week ago. She said many students were out during the event knocking on doors and mobilizing people to vote.

Sen. Kari Dziedzic, DFL-Minneapolis, said at the event that she and Rep. Phyllis Kahn had been “dorm storming” Monday and encouraged students to go vote on Tuesday. Dziedzic and Kahn represent the University of Minnesota area in the state Legislature.

“It’s your future,” Dziedzic said.

The campaign also made stops at Gustavus Adolphus College, Eagan and Edina on Monday, Trentman said.

Throughout the week, the bus also visited cities including Bemidji, Duluth, Brainerd and Rochester, she said.

“There was definitely solidarity in our fight to win this election,” she said. “That was very inspiring.”
