Minnesota women’s basketball senior guard Lindsay Whalen and junior center Janel McCarville were named Tuesday to the All-Big Ten first team by conference coaches.
Whalen was a unanimous choice of both coaches and conference media. McCarville was named to the second team by the media.
Whalen became the first player in Minnesota history to be a three-time first-team member; it was also her third consecutive unanimous selection.
McCarville was a media first-team selection last season and coaches’ second-team pick. She was a second-team honoree in her freshman season.
Whalen, who has been sidelined with a hand injury since Feb. 12, finished second in conference scoring, averaging 20.7 points per game. She is currently fifth in Big Ten scoring history with 2,186 career points. Whalen was also averaging five rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game.
McCarville is averaging a double-double this season, scoring 15.3 points per game and 10 rebounds.
The Gophers play Thursday against Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament’s opening round.
