The University’s latest top 10 athletic finish has come in an unusual category: concrete canoe racing.
A 20-student contingent from the University’s civil engineering department placed 10th among 26 teams this weekend at the Ninth Annual National Concrete Canoe Finals. The event was sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and held in Lake Mendota at the University of Wisconsin.
Paddling their 18-foot, 130-pound, 100 percent concrete entry “Crusher,” the University students finished ninth in the men’s sprint and women’s distance categories and 10th in the coed sprint race.
The competition awarded 60 percent of each team’s total points based on design characteristics.
Other Big Ten entries included Michigan State (second place), Wisconsin (12th) and Illinois (16th).
