The Gophers women’s golf team finished its fall season play Tuesday in Las Vegas.
Minnesota finished sixth out of 18 teams in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Stallion Mountain Golf Course.
The team was competitive throughout the event, finishing eight shots behind tournament-champion and Big Ten-rival Indiana. The Hoosiers won the meet by three strokes over Central Florida.
Head coach Michele Redman said the Gophers played their best golf this week. She said she was happy they finished ahead of nationally ranked opponents.
Sophomore Carmen Laguna tied for third place to lead Minnesota. Laguna bounced back with two rounds of even-par 72 after taking bogeys on three of the final-five holes to shoot an opening-round 3-over-par 75. She finished the tournament 3-over par.
The tournament was the best of Laguna’s young career, as she broke personal records for her best tournament finish and tournament score to par. Her best finish previously was a tie for 11th at the Rebel Intercollegiate last April, where she shot 7-over- par 223.
Redman said Laguna managed the ball well around the course and was able to put shots on the green and in the fairway.
Junior Banchalee Theinthong tied for ninth. She used rounds of 73, 74 and 75 to finish the tournament at 222, three shots behind Laguna.
Redman said she was pleased with how well Theinthong played this week after struggling last week in Indiana.
Senior Jackie Shepherd tied for 42nd. She finished her opening round Sunday with six-straight pars en route to a 2-over-par 74. Shepherd shot 7-over par Monday and Tuesday.
Sophomores Sarinee Thitiratanakorn and Anna Laorr tied for 49th. Thitiratanakorn’s 4-over-par effort Tuesday was her best in the tournament.
Laorr also played her best golf Tuesday, shooting a 3-over par 75.
The team will not compete again until Feb. 18-19 at the Central District Invitational in Tampa, Fla. Redman said the team has a few more weeks of practice before winter break.
