Student-run art space 1419 was officially shutdown by the City of Minneapolis yesterday.
The building on 1419 Washington Ave S and the Love Power building a few doors down were closed due to two city ordinance violations.
On their Facebook page, 1419 describes themsevles as ” a student-run interdisciplinary art space and residency devoted to the creation and exhibition of experimental projects”
1419 has been having difficulties for the past few months as their events grew bigger and the landlord wanted more money.
TCDaily Planet reported “when their landlord, Surinder Singh, caught wind that the artists weren’t just putting on small student productions but were drawing in large crowds, he demanded they start paying more for rent.”
Fans on their Facebook were notified late last night with the status update “[1419] HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY EVICTED BY THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS!!! IN YOUR FACE LANDLORD!!!”
