Mesa Pizza will open a second University of Minnesota location in Stadium Village this spring.
The news comes just days after Doran Companies requested demolition of three Dinkytown properties , including the building housing Mesa’s original location.
Mesa owner David Hathaway told the Minnesota Daily on Friday that the new store is an expansion location and not a replacement for the Dinkytown store.
The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission will meet Jan. 21 to discuss the demolition applications for three Dinkytown properties and determine if they have historical significance.
In the meantime, Hathaway said he’s contemplating the options for his original store.
“Our plan is still being worked on,” he said. “We haven’t figured it out 100 percent yet. We’re still working on it.”
Hathaway said the popular pizza-by-the-slice chain will open the new store at Stadium Village Plaza on Washington Avenue, between Burger King and Darque Tan.
Hathaway said the location will open in mid-March or early April, and its size and menu will mirror the Dinkytown location.
Trautz Properties, Inc. operates Stadium Village Plaza. President John Trautz said Hathaway first discussed purchasing the location in the summer and signed a “long-term” lease.
Trautz said he’s thrilled to have Hathaway and his pizza business as a tenant.
“Mesa has a great concept,” he said. “A guy has a successful formula [and] he wants to expand it. It makes all the sense in the world.”
