The Gophers football team has released redshirt freshman running back Kevin Whaley, head coach Tim Brewster announced in a release by the University on Wednesday.
Whaley requested to be released from his scholarship and will be allowed to transfer to another school, the release said.
Whaley had been indefinitely suspended for "violating team rules and policies following Minnesota’s appearance in the Insight Bowl."
According to multiple reports, Whaley was involved in an incident at a nightclub in Scottsdale, Ariz., just hours after the Gophers’ 14-13 loss to Iowa State in the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. on New Year’s Eve.
Whaley was the team’s second-leading rusher in 2009, as he had 88 carries for 367 yards and two touchdowns.
