Shopping in New York Nothing beats winter break âÄî endless hours of âÄúJersey ShoreâÄù reruns, spending all my days in my frigid apartment and, best of all, taking a trip to New York. Luckily, several of my Minnesota friends have successfully relocated to the city and were willing to play host for my shopping trip. First things first: Topshop. Sorry to say it, but the hype for this overseas import, now a fixture on our shores in SoHo, is undeserved. While the styles are impressive, itâÄôs too expensive considering that their quality is on par with Forever 21 and H&M. However, the three floors (four if you count Topman) are fun to peruse if you can manage to arrive at a time when the usual chaos isnâÄôt happening. If I worked there, IâÄôd definitely have a panic attack several times a day. The best part about NYC is that even though it looks massive, itâÄôs much more walkable than our tundra-like territory. We visited Bergdorf Goodman, favorite of S(erena) and B(lair), and the stunning and quirky Barneys New York. Since I couldnâÄôt afford anything, I spent most of my time in their beauty floors smelling fancy perfumes not sold here in the Cities. If you feel like buying me a present, I really like Le LaboâÄôs Rose 31 perfume, which is meant for dudes. For every silly mall chain thereâÄôs a unique boutique like Robert James, who makes his menswear right in his laid-back, ultra-cool Lower East Side store. Finally, for a break from fashion, we perused the 18 miles of books at The Strand. Fashionistas read, too! Golden Globes fashion Speaking of Olsens, the Golden Globes showed on NBC on Sunday night, and AshleyâÄôs flirty post-show party dress was my favorite of the evening âÄî minus the bubble hem. Her boyfriend Justin BarthaâÄôs massive summer movie âÄúThe HangoverâÄù won best comedy/musical, so of course Ashley pulled out all the stops to support her man. Love the royal blue Manolos, too. Ultra-curvy Christina Hendricks of âÄúMad MenâÄù has been getting flak for her peachy, Barbie-esque Christian Siriano gown (and I hated it), but I liked the more subtle shade as worn by Christina Aguilera, (in Versace, and Emily Blunt, in Dolce & Gabbana. If you watch âÄúThe Rachel Zoe Project,âÄù you undoubtedly know that celebrities are basically required to play it safe on the red carpet and rarely take any fashion risks for fear of being slaughtered by Khloé Kardashian (who has no fashion sense whatsoever) and the E! Red Carpet team or torn to pieces on blogs. This year, however, certain celebs did face the challenge. Diane Kruger, always stunning, donned an electric magenta Christian Lacroix, a bold move that hasnâÄôt been receiving favorable reviews. I, however, adored that incredible silhouette. (And Josh Jackson on her arm wasnâÄôt bad either.) Another dress I loved was Drew BarrymoreâÄôs Atelier Versace. The ladies at Jezebel.com think it looks like sheâÄôs got a coral reef attached to her hip, but I disagree. And kudos to Drew on her well-deserved win for her turn as fashion icon Little Edie Beale in HBOâÄôs âÄúGrey Gardens.âÄù IâÄôve seen it eight or nine times. January JonesâÄô futuristic black Lanvin was booed by bloggers and TV hosts, but once again, I enjoyed it. SheâÄôs got the swagger to pull it off. And while Chloë SevignyâÄôs fluttery lavender Valentino wasnâÄôt my favorite, I applaud her for being a little kooky on the carpet. Khloé Kardashian and Giuliania can suck it.
